Dolaucothi Woodlands Ranger, Pumsaint (part-time)

Dolaucothi Woodlands Ranger. Part time, fixed term role for 22 months.

National Trust Cymru are looking to recruit an experienced Ranger or Countryside Warden to help deliver its biodiversity and community engagement objectives on the 1167ha Dolaucothi Estate, Pumsaint. The role is funded by the National Lottery and Welsh Government under The Woodlands Investment Grant (TWIG).

Based at the NT offices located at the Dolaucothi Gold Mine site on the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Estate, the Ranger will be working as part of the wider Carmarthenshire Ranger team.

As well as prior experience as a Ranger or similar applicants should have the ability and desire to engage with local stakeholders, land owners, project partners and especially the local community.

The job will involve…

  • Surveying the estate for invasive, non-native species and arranging for control measures to be implemented.
  • Surveying woodland boundaries to identify work relating to livestock control in order to protect these habitats from over grazing.
  • Assessment of the connectivity of woodlands in relation to wildlife corridors and community/visitor access to these spaces for future improvement works will also be undertaken.
  • Restoration of the parkland estate woodlands that are part of the Registered Historic Landscape and work to protect Scheduled Ancient Monuments within those woodland features.
  • Being the first point of contact for the community and engaging with them to keep them informed of progress and to encourage them to become involved though volunteering activities such as woodland planting, thinning, fencing, access improvements, installation of Pine Marten nest box’s, control of non-native species and design and installation of interpretation boards.

The role will include working some weekends, bank holiday and evenings.

  • Have a passion to engage with visitors to explain the value of NT’s conservation work and the benefit to people and nature.
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors.
  • Be enthusiastic with a willingness to learn and be part of a team.
  • Have the ability to work safely, undertake risk assessments and compliance, including competence and certificates required to work with machinery and equipment.
  • Have experience of working in an outdoor setting in a land, access and conservation management role.
  • Possess a full UK driving licence.

Welsh language though not essential would be beneficial for the role.
