On this one day course participants will be making a small version of this Irish domestic potato serving basket (scib), with a portcullis centre.
Traditionally an Irish potato scib would have been 18″-22″ across and finished with a rod border. However on this course a smaller version about 13″ across will be made. More experienced weavers can choose to put a plaited border on if they wish.
Participants can choose from a variety of naturally coloured willow to make theirown unique and beautiful basket.
Course participants will be learning traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture.
The Irish potato scib workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those who have previously done some willow basket weaving.
All tools and materials provided, but bring your own sharp secateurs and a knife if you have them.
Please wear warm old clothing.
The tutor for this willow basket weaving course is Jane Welsh.
Jane is a guest tutor from Devon, usually visiting West Wales to teach at Denmark Farm twice a year. Jane is a very skilled basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.
Places are limited to eight participants per event and must be booked in advance.
