Willow Weaving (Exploring Square Work) at Denmark Farm

A two day willow exploration into square work to weave a functional basket of your choice, whether it be for your tools, logs, square shopper or general storage.
willow square basket.

On this course you will learn how to weave a square willow basket using the ‘WI’ method of construction. The course will start by using a clamp to weave square bases. In the basket sides waling, randing or slewing will be used, and they will be finished with a rod border and a choice of handles.

You will have the option to choose between adding willow roped handles or finger holes onto the side.

Course participants will be learning traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture.

This willow square basket workshop is suitable for people who have previously done some willow basket weaving and practical beginners are also welcome.

All tools and materials provided, but bring your own sharp secateurs and a knife if you have them.

Please wear warm old clothing.

The tutor for this willow basket weaving course is Jane Welsh.

Jane is a guest tutor from Devon, usually visiting West Wales to teach at Denmark Farm twice a year. Jane is a very skilled basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.
